This year (2017) on 15th August- national holiday in Greece,- I decided to have a daily trip including hiking on Mt Pinovo and swimming in Lake Koupa instead of following the crowds on a breakout in Chalkidiki.

Pinovo, Pella, Greece

The hike

The Mt Pinovo, is located northeast of the valley of Almopia, on the border line with FYROM and reaches 2,156 m heigh (Korfoula Peak). The mountain is covered by dense forests and alpine meadows. Other known peaks, is Visogkrant (2,150 m.) and Monk (1873 m.). Both Pinovo and Tzena (the mountain next to) were war fields during the first World War and the Civil War; thus, ruins and remnants can be met quite often.

Early morning we drove up to Aetochori, a tiny but lovely village. Its picturesque square is the starting point of the trail. To reach all peaks, the path is common till Valley of Rocks then you have to make your choice. We picked the route to the Monk to keep the hike short in order to avoid summer noon heat. Members of HMC of Aridaia put extreme effort to keep the trail well signed and clean. Diversity found both on difficulty level and scenery.

On the way back we had a coffee on this awesome square and took a glimpse on the temple of St Dimitrios.

Some more sight seeing on the way…

Not long after jumping on the car, we detour a bit to visit a monastery dedicated to Archangel Michael. It is one of the most well-preserved historical monuments in the region. Its foundation dates back to the late 18th – early 19th century and it is located on the hill of the valley of northern Almopia, surrounded by a rich natural environment with cedar, chestnut and walnut trees, cherry trees, ponds and mini-waterfalls.

According to rumours and some non-verified evidence, in the past, that particular site had been used as the Artemis temple, a Roman sanctuary and  a refuge during the civil war. The frescoes of the church are equally impressive although physical damage due to the humidity is evident.

Lake Koupa, Skra

The emerald lake

Deep in the forest of Mt Paiko, between Koupa and Skra villages we met our summer oasis. Dare to jump into its chilling water; it will be a reviving experience nonetheless.

Few things more…

If you feel hungry there are some tavernas, all worth-eating, around in Archangelos or Koupa.

Project “Living history, Living nature” provide ample information about the region via its site.

You can order or download a hiking map of Pinovo through Geopsis
