There is a place, where the enchanting sea is blue; so blue, it is impossible to tell where it ends. And the soil is so dark, you would think you just set foot someplace unknown. Once I was told that when I go to Santorini no other island will be able to fulfill my thirst to explore this much and I laughed with irony. Now I understand how naive I was.
The high view of the sea, due to the island’s mountainous terrain emits peace and serenity, while the traditional white houses blend in so harmoniously with the surrounding environment, it makes you wonder how did the architecture managed to match so perfectly with the abrupt terrain and the cliffs across the volcano. The cliffs facing the volcano are also known as Caldera.
Trying to find even a simple imperfect feature is impossible. The sea, the architecture, the sunrise and sunset, the fabulous local wine; made mostly from a variety named Assyrtiko, even the people were so airy and loose; made you instantly forgot all of your problems and thus, day by day, you were becoming synchronized with the island’s harmonious vibes.
At dusk, the vast majority of the tourists was gathered around Oia and Imerovigli villages, to enjoy the sunset. I understood why it was so crowdy when I first faced the sunset. It wasn’t something really extra-ordinary by itself, but combined with all the aformentioned majestic features of the island it was the best thing I saw in my entire life.
Right after, most people would go back to their rooms and suites and get ready for the night. Although someone would expect a romantic island to mostly attract couples, you will be surprised by how many groups of friends visit Santorini. The heart of the night beats at Fira, the central village of Santorini. Fira are built on the Caldera as well as the rest of the villages. The narrow alleys are vast and they are swarming with young tourists. Alcohol is of course abundant, so you might encounter some wild stuff if you are not so careful! Whatsoever clubs and cocktail bars are plenty and cover up everyone’s taste. Most cocktail bars are built exactly on the tip of the cliff, providing a spectacular night view of the Caldera and the harbour, like Crystal and Tango bars. It all feels possible now, once seduced by the islands nightlife delerium.
Beaches may not be equivalent to other picturesque ones around Greece, but they are unique for sure. Black sand is always present to remind the volcanic synthesis of the island’s soil and spectacular beach bars have raised around to fill the gap. Some of them have very exquisite cuisine, such like Theros beach bar at Eros beach.
In conclusion, Santorini’s grandeur lies within its simplicity. Aegean blue, volcanic soil, Cycladic architecture and abundant sunlight. Nothing more a soul needs to find inner peace during the day and stories to tell for a lifetime to accompany frivolous nights.
