One of those lazy Sundays of early spring raised and no activities were scheduled. What a waste would have been! So, some brief phone calls and here we go for a short trip nearby, to the castle of Methoni and the Kalamari waterfall.
The castle of Methoni
I have visited the castle several times so far. It is one of my favourite points of interest while I have my guests out for sight seeing. Some reports regarding Methoni take us back up to 3rd century b.C. but anyhow the town and its castle thrived under Venetian dominance around 12th century. It is a vast fortified area. Everyone can be amazed by the amazing arched bridge to the main gate and the ”standing alone” Bourtzi. There have been some renovations recently but still needs a lot of work to be done to reach its potentials. Ticket price is only 2 euros but check the, ridiculously short, visiting hours first.
Additionally, take a stroll in Methoni, swim or eat something. Alternatively, head either to Foinikounda or to Pylos area. Last time we had the appetite for the second one.
Waterfall of Kalamari
There are lots of things to do around Pylos; no doubt about that. One of them is to hike a bit in order to visit a nice, hidden from common sight till recently, waterfall. Just after Gialova there are some road signs to follow. Easy to find, even easier to hike till there since there is no road access after a point. Nonetheless, it could be a … cool escape during hot summer days.
