Getting to the second southmost edge of continental Europe is somewhat exciting. Though it’s not all about the destination, it’s the journey also that counts. Reaching the legendary Ade’s gate and visiting the scenic lighthouse in Cape Tainaro means that one should wonder across mythical Mani. Athirst to hit the road with us?
Kardamyli
Leaving Kalamata behind and heading south. First stop, roughly an hour of drive later. Visit the old town and Moyrtzinos tower, take a walk into the alleys and have a coffee break in “Aquarella”.
Foneas Beach
Probably my favourite beach in Messenia. It is located in a small rocky gulf and it offers a wild taste of greek natural beauty. Ask to get directions to visit Vatsinidi Cave for a memorable experience. Additionally, in case you’ ve got any scuba gear with you, certainly worth to take the shot for some light cave diving.
Alternate beaches are Delphinia and Kalogria. The second one is particularly popular and often crowded; that’s why I personally dislike it at all.
Agios Nikolaos
Way less famous than nearby Stoupa, it retains the traditional image of a typical fishing village in Greece. You could take a small hike across the coastline up to Stoupa as long as it will be not very hot.
I would suggest to have a detour, also, in order to pass though Kariovouni and Milea. Another one could be towards Trachila but only if you are not tight on time.
Limeni
One of the most photographed places in Mani; no argues about. Traditional rocky buildings and crystal clear water make a scenic composition. Moreover, you could dine in “Takis” fish tavern.
Areopolis
An optional stop. Not highly recommended though.
Caves of Diros
Get deep down under. A huge complex of caves on your way, the size of them still unknown. Only a distance of 2,5kms is open to public by a 40′ boat tour. Certainly one of the must-see!
Gerolimenas
Tiny and remote (no road connection till late ’70s) coastal village. Another typical example of fishing port in Mani.
Vathia
An almost abandoned town pops up at the top of a hill overlooking the surrounding area and Mediterranean. Trademark of the place the fortress-like houses; build like that to avoid any possible invasions.
The lighthouse
Finally we are almost few steps from our destination, in fact, forty minutes of easy hike away. Gazing the infinite sea is way beyond rewarding!
Few tips…
Road is windy so drive carefully!
You will enjoy better if you have an overnight stay and split the trip in half…
