Sometimes you just fall in love with a place. It happens though, simply because it perfectly suits you and you feel like home, the one you were dreaming of. Finding a piece of land, where tranquility and harmony rule all around.

 Samothraki Island

Samothrace

Located in the North Aegean Sea, this quite small island is not amongst the popular and commercialised ones in Greece but it is preferred by people who seek an alternative destination. Mt Saos stands really imposing; highest peak is around 1.600m (quite impressive for a tiny island!) and it really makes a huge contrast with the sea level.

On a historic look…

One of the most important religion sanctuaries of ancient Greece; it used to host Kaviria Mysteries, a series of ritual events. Visit Palaiopolis to fall into the mysterious spiritual mood. Moreover, it is the Nike’s home,- not the sports brand- but the famous statue of the Greek goddess. Although it is a Louvre resident for the last couple of centuries, Nike originates from the island.

Accomoddation

There are apartments for rent on the island; most of them in Kamariotissa. I am not a real fan of this village, too noisy and crowded for my taste and I consider it a misfit in respect with the total atmosphere, so  I suggest to find somewhere else to sleep.

Yet, the most popular choice is the municipal camping site, near Therma. Moreover, free camping is supposed to be illegal, as everywhere else, but locals don’t have a strict policy about it in general.

Eating out

One of my favourite restaurant (or taverna in Greek) is “O Psaras” (Fisherman) considering that we have been there almost everyday, either for lunch or dinner. Traditional scenery by the sea with exquisite food quality and great hospitality (yeah, I am a fan of this guy, I admit it!!!). I would, also, suggest Therma Cafe (no need to specify the place…) and Aetsa in Chora for late evening. Anyhow, besides the fish and seafood, try to taste some lamb.

Things to do

Stroll through the alleys in Chora, swim in Pachia Ammos or Kipoi and visit Panagia (Holy Mother) Krimniotissa. Hike, for sure, the gorges and dive into Vathres (stone basins on the foot of waterfalls); probably one of the must-do things! In addition, there are thermal springs in case you are looking for wellness spa therapy in Therma (frankly, not too hard to guess by its name!). Last but not least, rent a bike and cycle along the island; distances are not so great and your only concern should be the sun.

Few things more…

There is daily ferry connection from Alexandroupolis. You may check the schedule here.

More than one third of the island has no road access.
